Vitamins for children: Why do children need vitamins?
Vitamin requirements for growing children
As our little whirlwind grows, their body changes—and their cognitive, mental, and intellectual abilities continue to develop. During these formative stages, our children’s nutrient requirements are especially high. A balanced diet is essential for children’s health and well-being.
Child nutrition: What does the science say?
Current child nutrition studies, including the EsKiMo II study (KiGGS module, Robert Koch Institute (2021)), show the effects of eating habits (see picky eater) on children’s health. For example, more than 50% of children aged 6 to 11 do not reach the recommended D-A-CH reference values for 9 of the 15 vitamins and minerals examined. A similar situation is seen among 12- to 17-year-olds.
Which vitamins are missing?
According to the Child Nutrition Study (EsKiMo II), more than 50% of children do not meet the recommended D-A-CH reference values for the following vitamins: vitamins A, C, D, and E, and folate, or for the trace elements calcium, iron, iodine, and zinc.

Frequently asked questions about vitamins for children
For growth and healthy development, children generally need all vitamins as well as sufficient minerals. The vitamins particularly important for children are those that studies have found to be deficient. These are vitamins A, C, D, and E, as well as folate. Among the trace elements, these are calcium, iron, iodine, and zinc.
There is broad consensus among pediatric professionals that additional vitamin intake should primarily be considered when the daily diet has deficiencies. An exception is vitamin D supplementation, which is recommended almost universally in current medical guidelines during the first year of life. For older children, experts mainly discuss supplementation in cases of unbalanced eating habits or during puberty. Particular attention is often paid to maintaining balanced iron levels in young girls, as iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin.
It is also frequently emphasized that nutrient intake should ideally be tailored to the child’s specific age group and corresponding needs. The sodium content of preparations for children should also always be kept low.
An increased need for micronutrients often develops gradually. Important signs that the body needs support may include declining concentration, reduced energy levels, or a strained immune system. For example, B vitamins play an important role in maintaining normal mucous membranes, such as those at the corners of the mouth, and healthy skin. A deficiency of important minerals can also affect normal cognitive performance or growth. If you feel that your child needs additional support, it is advisable to optimize their vitamin intake and provide the body with high-quality nutrients in a targeted way.
Ideally, children should obtain all the vitamins and minerals they need through a balanced diet.
This includes eating a variety of vegetables and fruit every day, as well as fish or meat several times a week.
In reality, however, children may not eat these foods regularly, whether because of their preferences or a hectic daily routine.
If children consistently avoid important food groups and have an unbalanced diet, they may develop nutrient deficiencies.
In such cases, vitamin supplements may be helpful to ensure that children receive all the essential nutrients they need for healthy growth and development.
Every child has individual nutritional needs, which is why an individual assessment is needed to determine how much of each vitamin a child requires daily. We recommend taking supplemental vitamins and minerals only when the child’s current stage of life does not allow for a balanced diet.
If the child does not have a blood test to determine whether a specific nutrient deficiency is present, our Kids Complete product can help provide the child with important vitamins.
We developed the product based on the latest studies on children’s nutrition and selected the combination of vitamins so that those more frequently found to be insufficient in children, according to studies, are included at higher doses. In this way, the product helps prevent insufficient intake of certain vitamins.
For children aged 4 and over, it is particularly important to ensure an adequate supply of various vitamins and minerals to promote healthy development and a strong immune system. The following vitamins and minerals are especially important:
- Vitamin D: This vitamin is crucial for bone health and the immune system. Since vitamin D is produced mainly through exposure to sunlight and many children do not get enough sun, additional intake is often necessary.
- Vitamin A: Supports vision, the immune system, and cell growth. An adequate supply is essential for overall health.
- Vitamin C: Important for the immune system and for reducing tiredness and fatigue. It also supports the absorption of iron from food, which is particularly important for children whose diet is low in meat.
- Vitamin E: A powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage and supports the immune system.
- Folate (vitamin B9): Essential for cell growth and the development of the nervous system. Particularly important during periods of growth.
- Iron: Children who eat little meat often have an inadequate iron intake. Iron is important for oxygen transport in the blood and cognitive development.
- Calcium and vitamin K: These two nutrients are crucial for strong bones and teeth. They contribute to the healthy development of the skeletal system.
- Zinc: Supports the immune system and cognitive function.
- Iodine: Essential for the healthy development of the thyroid gland and energy metabolism.
It is important to note that many children in Germany do not receive sufficient amounts of these micronutrients. According to the EsKiMo II study (Robert Koch Institute, 2020), more than 50% of children aged 6 to 11 do not reach the recommended reference values for 9 of the 15 vitamins and minerals examined. These include vitamin A, D, and E, folate, calcium, iron, iodine, potassium, and zinc. Children eat too little fruit and vegetables, which leads to an inadequate supply of micronutrients.
To ensure that children aged 4 and over receive optimal nutrition, a balanced diet containing fruit, vegetables, and fortified foods can be helpful. If this cannot be adequately implemented in practice, supplementation with vitamin and mineral preparations should be considered.
As the need for nutrients for growth increases significantly during puberty, an adequate supply of vitamin D and calcium helps maintain normal bones, while iron and B vitamins contribute to reducing tiredness, and vitamin C and zinc support the normal function of the immune system during this intense developmental phase.
Children can naturally obtain the vitamins and minerals that studies indicate are more commonly deficient through the following foods:
Vitamin A: e.g., carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, spinach.
Vitamin C: e.g., broccoli, oranges, bell peppers, kiwi.
Vitamin D: e.g., salmon, tuna, egg yolk, fortified dairy products, mushrooms.
Vitamin E: e.g., almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, avocado, olive oil.
Folate: e.g., leafy green vegetables (spinach, kale), legumes (lentils, chickpeas).
Calcium: e.g., dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese), leafy green vegetables (kale, broccoli).
Iron: e.g., red meat (beef, pork), legumes (beans, lentils), beetroot.
Iodine: e.g., seafood (seaweed, fish), fortified table salt, dairy products.
Zinc: e.g., red meat (beef, pork), poultry, seafood (oysters, crab), legumes (chickpeas, lentils).

Vitamins for children aged 4 and up
Our vitamins are specially developed for children aged 4 and over and reliably support your child through the most important growth phases—whether in preschool, primary school, or at 8, 9, or 10 years old.
Is your child under 4 years old?
Dietary supplements in the form of fruity gummies are generally not recommended for children under 4 years of age (caution: choking hazard). The exception is when there is a proven need for essential vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s—as determined by a
doctor or trusted naturopath. The extent of your child’s specific nutrient needs depends on their overall health, age, weight, and dietary habits. As a manufacturer of dietary supplements for children, we follow the official recommendations of the German Nutrition Society (DGE).
Are you still unsure how to provide your child under 4 with the most important nutrients in the best possible way? We would be happy to advise you personally: 07771 6340380 (Mon–Fri: 8 a.m.–4 p.m.)
Is your child older than 10 years?
Pubescent or prepubescent children, usually between 10 and 12 years old, already have significantly higher nutrient requirements than children up to 10 years old. We therefore recommend our vitamins for teenagers in the form of our delicious, higher-dose gummy bears.

Quick test: Is your child getting enough vitamins?
1. Does your child eat three child-sized handfuls of vegetables and fruit of different types/colors every day?
2. Does your child eat approximately 100 g of oily fish (e.g., herring, salmon, mackerel, tuna) two to three times a week?
YES
If the answer is yes, your child is probably getting enough nutrients, so you can rest assured.
NO
If the answer is no, there is a risk that your child may not be getting enough of one or more nutrients.
Important vitamins for children
Vitamin A is essential for children and contributes to the maintenance of normal vision, skin, mucous membranes, and immune system function.
Vitamin A is obtained through animal products such as liver and dairy products, as well as through beta-carotene from plant sources such as carrots and spinach, which the body converts into vitamin A.
The recommended daily intake for children varies depending on age, and even small amounts of certain foods may be sufficient to meet their needs. Because it is fat-soluble, the body can store vitamin A, making overdose possible; therefore, a balanced intake is important.
It is particularly important for children following a vegetarian or vegan diet to ensure sufficient beta-carotene intake to guarantee an adequate supply of vitamin A.
Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is an essential nutrient that plays a key role in our bodies, particularly in cell division. For children, an adequate supply of folic acid is especially important, as it contributes to the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy, normal blood formation, and the development of the nervous system. Natural folate is found primarily in green leafy vegetables and legumes, while folic acid, the synthetic form, is often present in fortified foods and dietary supplements. In our wowtamins, by the way, we use only natural folate.
The recommended daily amounts vary depending on age and special needs, such as pregnancy or breastfeeding. Despite the availability of folate in many foods, many children and adolescents do not reach the recommended daily amounts, which can lead to an inadequate intake. This highlights the importance of a balanced diet rich in folate-containing foods or the consideration of dietary supplements to ensure an adequate intake. It is especially essential for growing children to ensure an adequate supply of folic acid.
In addition to folic acid, other B vitamins also play an important role in normal development. Vitamin B1, for example, plays a role in energy metabolism, as it contributes to normal energy metabolism. Vitamin B2 is also important for physical development and protecting cells from oxidative stress, as it contributes to normal iron metabolism and the maintenance of normal skin and vision. Last but not least, vitamin B6 is an important building block for the nervous system and the body’s natural defenses, as it contributes to the normal function of the immune system and the normal regulation of hormonal activity (messenger substances). Since these vitamins are water-soluble and can hardly be stored by the body, a regular intake is of great importance, particularly during intensive growth phases.
Vitamin B12, an essential water-soluble vitamin, is indispensable for children, as it contributes to normal energy metabolism, the normal functioning of the immune and nervous systems, and the formation of red blood cells. It is particularly important to ensure that children receive an adequate intake, as they are in an intensive phase of growth and development.
The German Nutrition Society recommends between 0.5 and 4.0 micrograms per day, depending on the age group. Although children who regularly consume animal products often receive sufficient vitamin B12, a predominantly plant-based diet carries a risk of deficiency. This is because vitamin B12 is found mainly in animal products such as meat, fish, dairy products, and eggs. A balanced diet that includes these foods can generally meet the requirement.
For children who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, it is advisable to supplement their diet with a vitamin B12 supplement to prevent deficiency. Since such a deficiency often develops gradually, it is advisable to have the vitamin B12 status checked with a blood test if a deficiency is suspected.
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient valued primarily for its contribution to the normal function of the immune system. For children who actively and curiously explore the world, an adequate intake of vitamin C is particularly important.
Since the human body cannot produce vitamin C itself, it is important to obtain this vitamin through the diet. Fruits and vegetables such as oranges, kiwis, broccoli, and bell peppers are excellent sources of vitamin C.
Children can meet their recommended daily requirement with just one serving of fruit or vegetables, showing how easily an adequate intake can be ensured. Especially during the colder months, when colds and flu are more common, maintaining a good vitamin C intake can be essential.
It is therefore important to establish vitamin C as a regular part of children's daily diet.
Vitamin D, often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin,” is just as important for children as it is for adults. It contributes to the absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus, normal calcium levels in the blood, and therefore also to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It also makes an important contribution to the normal function of the immune system and muscles. Children who receive sufficient vitamin D can help prevent a range of health problems, including softening of the bones (rickets).
In Germany and similar latitudes, however, the body’s production of vitamin D through sunlight may be insufficient during the winter months. It is therefore important to turn to alternative sources of vitamin D. Fatty fish, eggs, and fortified foods can contribute to vitamin D intake, but food alone is often not enough to meet the body’s needs.
Supplementation may be necessary, particularly for children who spend little time outdoors, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, or have darker skin—especially during winter.
The German Nutrition Society recommends a daily intake of 20 micrograms (800 IU) for children aged one and over to prevent deficiency. An adequate supply of vitamin D is therefore essential for children’s well-being.
Vitamin E, a collective term for a group of fat-soluble compounds (tocopherols), plays an important role for children, particularly in protecting cells from oxidative stress.
Because children are actively growing and developing, it is important to ensure that they receive sufficient vitamin E.
Vitamin E is primarily found in foods such as plant oils, nuts, seeds, and whole-grain products. One simple way to meet a child’s daily needs is to supplement their diet with snacks such as a handful of nuts or a cereal rich in vitamin E.
Given that children can often be picky eaters, it is useful to find creative ways to incorporate these important foods into their meals.
